Second hand laptop in Mira Road: how to check one before you pay

Most used laptops in Mira Road and Bhayandar are sold on one photo and a spoken promise. You can do better in twenty minutes at the counter. These are the checks we run on every machine before we list it, written out so you can run them anywhere, including on us.

Why a used laptop goes wrong

A used machine almost never fails on the thing you looked at. It fails on the battery that was already at half its life, the drive that was already logging errors, the hinge that was already cracked under the plastic, or the charger that was a cheap replacement. None of that shows up in a photo, and none of it shows up in five minutes of browsing on the seller’s table. It shows up in week six, when the seller’s number stops being answered.

So the question is not “does it switch on”. It is “what condition are the parts that wear out in, and who pays when one of them goes”. Every check below is aimed at one of those two.

The eleven checks

Ask for each of these out loud. A seller who has actually tested the machine will answer with a number. A seller who has not will answer with a feeling.

  1. Battery backup, measured

Ask for the charge cycle count and the current full-charge capacity against the design capacity. A number, not "battery is good". A used battery at 60 percent of design capacity gives roughly an hour of light work.

  2. Drive health

Ask for the SMART reading on the SSD or hard disk: reallocated sectors, power-on hours, and for an SSD the wear indicator. A drive with reallocated sectors is the machine that dies in month three.

  3. The exact processor, not the family

i5 means nothing on its own. Ask for the full model number and the generation. An older i5 can be slower than a newer i3 for the same money.

  4. RAM, and whether it can grow

How much is fitted, in how many slots, and is one slot free. A machine with 8 GB in one slot has room to grow. Two 4 GB sticks in two slots does not.

  5. Screen, under a white and a black image

A full white screen shows stains and pressure marks. A full black screen shows dead and stuck pixels and backlight bleed. Do both, in shop light and with the light off.

  6. Every key and the trackpad

Open a text box and press every key, including the function row and the arrow keys. Then the trackpad, the click, and the two-finger scroll.

  7. Ports, with something plugged in

Each USB port with a drive, the HDMI with a screen, the headphone jack, the card reader, the LAN socket. A port that is dead is a repair you will pay for later.

  8. Hinges, body and the base

Open and close the lid slowly and watch the hinge corners for lifting plastic. Press the palm rest. Turn the machine over and look for missing screws, which mean it has been opened before.

  9. Heat under load

Let it run something heavy for ten minutes and feel the base and listen to the fan. A machine that gets hot and loud in ten minutes on the counter will throttle at home.

  10. The software it is sold with

Ask what operating system is installed and whether it is activated. An unactivated install nags forever and will not take updates properly.

  11. What happens in month three

The most important one, and the one nobody answers. Ask which parts are covered, for how long, and how you would claim. If the answer is spoken and not written, it is not a warranty.

What a real warranty on a used machine says

“One year warranty” on its own is not a warranty. A warranty you can hold has four things in it, and you should ask for all four in writing before any money changes hands.

Which parts are covered, named
Not “the laptop”. A list. Ours is battery, motherboard, keyboard, charger, RAM and SSD.
How long each part is covered, with an end date
Different parts fairly get different periods. On our machines those six parts are covered 1 year and the screen is covered 1 month, and the card prints the date each one ends.
What is not covered, said plainly
Liquid damage and physical damage are not covered by anyone selling used machines honestly. A seller who says everything is covered has not thought about it, or is not telling you the truth.
How you claim, six months from now
A phone number is a start. Something you can open and read again is better, because the argument in month six is always about what was promised.

Used, refurbished, or new at this budget

A used machine is sold as it came in. A refurbished machine has had the worn parts replaced and the software reinstalled before sale, which is why it costs a little more and lasts longer. A new machine at a budget price is usually a low specification built to hit that price, and it will feel slower in two years than a good refurbished business laptop bought today.

There is a case against us, and it is worth saying. If you need a machine at 2:00am tonight, or you want the manufacturer’s own service centre in fifteen cities, buy new online. What a local shop gives you instead is that the person who tested the machine is the person who repairs it, fifteen minutes away, and the pickup and drop is free.

How we do it, if you want the checking done for you

Every machine we sell is listed as one specific tested unit with its own written test report, its price, and the parts it is covered on. If you want to keep it off the shelf while you come in, ₹499 holds that exact machine for 48 hours and comes off the price. The balance is cash or UPI at the shop. If it is a repair you need instead of a machine, we take chip level repair, fabrication, installation, AMC and networking, with free pickup and drop across Mira-Bhayandar.
